Why I Mix Yoruba Language into My Songs…Tiwa Savage
Mavin records first lady, Tiwa Savage, has been speaking to BBC Africa's Bola Mosuro, about her new album R.E.D and explaining the challenges she went through to get the songs ready.
While responding to questions about her infusion of local dialect into her music, she explained that she can be a good singer but for her to connect with her culture, she has to respect her roots.
She noted that as an African singer, there should be that uniqueness that will stand one out from their Western counterparts and that is ability to connect.
In her words, “The reason why I always add my local dialect in my songs is because I want to stay true to my culture. I don't want it just because I want to be a singer and then what is the different between myself and Kelly Rowland. I just want to be African.”
