Uche Jombo, P-Square, Emem Isong, 2Face, Others Get Dues From DSTV
Report reaching Nollywoodgists.com indicates that the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) has signed a landmark agreement with MultiChoice Nigeria, a body that sells the platform; DSTV, in artistes' royalties payment and collection.
The deal was officially signed on Tuesday, June 26 at Oriental Hotel, Lekki, Lagos.
According to COSON boss, Tony Okoroji, "It is a great thing and long time coming. MultiChoice has clearly shown that it is a responsible corporate organisation with genuine concern for the protection of intellectual property in Nigeria.
"Their partnership with us for the development of the music industry is commendable.”
Mr John Ugbe, the Managing Director of MultiChoice Nigeria said his company is committed to the promotion of the entertainment industry in Nigeria.
He said, "piracy has a detrimental effect on any industry and will lead to the long term erosion of the industry. This includes the effect on artists and filmmakers rights and their payments.
"Piracy also has a detrimental effect on the economy, since generally those involved in piracy do not pay for the right owners for the works that they utilise and hardly, if ever, pay taxes and/or employ staff.
"The money that they make on the theft, since that is what piracy ultimately is, goes only to their pockets and not the rightful owners of the rights or materials.”
With this agreement, artistes like P-Square, 2Face, Wizkid, Davido Uche Jombo, Emem Isong, Kunle Afolayan and many others would get an annual fee from MultiChoice for the use of their intellectual work on the platform.
Nigerian music and films are contents that have made DSTV a good brand to be identified with apart from sports it is also known for.
